The Modern Schoolhouse Microschool

We the People for the Children

Core Practices

The Modern Schoolhouse defines its approach to learning as one that is personalized, holistic, student driven with a real-world focus.

Socratic Discussions:

Involving students in higher level thinking, encouraging students to reflect, critique and allow multiple perspectives to be examined in a collaborative environment.

Divergent Thinking:

A learning strategy that encourages students to come up with many different solutions to a problem.

ELA

Whole language approach is one that sees language as a whole entity. Writing, speaking, reading and listening are integrated into this practice.

Math

Students learn mathematics primarily through IXL and small group instruction. Zearn and Khan Academy will be used to supplement and enrich learning. Math will also be integrated into S.T.E.A.M. through the application of mathematics in real world situations.

Science/Social Studies

Science will be integrated into most S.T.E.A.M. lessons. Connor Boyak's book series "Tuttle Twins" will also be used to teach many Social Studies concepts.

Growth Mindset

Students believe their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication or hard work. They are less likely to become discouraged by failure because they reframe challenges as learning opportunities.

Six Pillars of Character: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring & Citizenship.

Az State standards will be used as a guide, but learning will not be limited to the Az State standards.
